Intelligent Document Processing (IDP) processes documents with greater speed and accuracy than traditional Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology.
An IDP solution uses an integrated technology set of Optical Character Recognition (OCR), Human-in-the-Loop (HITL), Machine Learning (ML), and Robotic Process Automation (RPA). IDP can handle multiple document types and process any type of structured or semi-structured documents, ranging from invoices to customer forms to patient records.

Optical character recognition (OCR)

analyzes an image, detects whether it contains text based on patterns, and extracts that text into a machine-readable format. It can also help convert handwritten characters into a machine-readable format.

Machine learning (ML)

is a computer system’s ability to independently improve its own performance through data exposure, outcomes, and a feedback loop. Patterns in vast volumes of data can be detected and interpreted using machine learning.

Human-in-the-loop (HITL)

OCR may be used to convert document images into digital formats, but it uses machine learning or deep learning to extract specific information.
It uses rule-based or template-based extraction. For each template type, the system needs to be trained by users.
The extraction does not depend on the template but content. Minimal training may be required for minor template changes.
Manual review is required for each converted document unless the documents inputted are standard in quality or positional elements.
Straight Through Processing (STP) can be enabled after the system is trained. The percentage of STP achieved can vary.
Cannot process unstructured documents, such as contracts and emails.
With the help of Natural Language Processing (NLP) capabilities, the system can process complex unstructured documents and can also create summaries.
